After Richard retired and made the permanent move to Plumas Eureka with his wife Hilda, he said the PEFD was looking for volunteer firefighters. Approximately 16 years later, he is still actively involved with the department. Some of his specialized training includes being a first responder, ice rescues, Hazmat and low angle rescues. Richard grew up in a service-oriented family so being allowed the opportunity to serve the community as a firefighter satisfies his need of fulfilling the family's tradition of being involved. "To me, there is great satisfaction in helping others, especially in their time of need. I would encourage all to become involved with their community fire department or other voluteer services." "Rich has recently been promoted to Captain, and also is a long'-time elected member of our Community Services District Board. He is a great guy, and his contributions are excellent." stated PEFD Fire Chief Tom Forster.
