Forest Health and Fuel Reduction Work
Updated 12/2/25

The Forest Service and local contractors are hard at work keeping our surrounding forests safe!
Forest Health and Fuel Reduction Work Underway
The U.S. Forest Service and its partners have begun fuel reduction and pile burning operations in areas surrounding our District, including Johnsville, Plumas Pines, and Mohawk Valley.
  • Madora IRTC Project: Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) and Graeagle Timber are conducting an ~800-acre stewardship contract focused on reducing fuels adjacent to the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Operations will occur outside of the Limited Operating Period (mid-February through mid-September) until the contract’s current termination date of December 2026.

The ongoing logging operation in the Plumas Pines area typically begins around 5:00 a.m. and concludes between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. Crews expect to continue cutting for approximately 20 to 30 more days, progressing steadily from south to north through the project area.

  • Pile Burning: Firefighters from the Plumas National Forest plan to conduct pile burns near Johnsville and Plumas Pines as weather and safety conditions allow.

Burning operations are planned to begin Wednesday, December 3rd, and continuing through Friday, December 5th, conditions permitting.  This is generally in the same area firefighters were working on in November.

Smoke is expected to be visible in the area but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including Mohawk, Johnsville, Plumas Pines, Graeagle, Blairsden and the surrounding areas.  Drivers on westbound California State Highway 70 will likely see smoke.

Please respect all contractors and fire personnel working in these areas. Never approach operating heavy equipment unless you have made direct eye contact with the operator—there are numerous blind spots and safety risks.

These projects are designed to improve forest health, enhance wildfire resilience, and protect nearby communities.
