CAL FIRE NEWS RELEASE
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
CONTACT:    Abby Dawson, PIO 530-257-4171
RELEASE DATE: November 4, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Susanville - With the prior and forecasted widespread precipitation throughout the area, the CAL FIRE Lassen Modoc Unit Chief will remove the requirement to obtain a burn permit to conduct outdoor burning effective November 7, 2025, at 7:00 am. Anyone conducting any type of burning may still be held criminally and/or civilly liable for any escaped burn. The reduction of the requirement to obtain a permit affects all areas of State Responsibility Area (SRA) within Lassen, Modoc, and Plumas Counties.

Citizens should always practice safe burning practices such as not burning on windy days, remaining in attendance with their burn piles and always calling the respective air district first to ensure it is a permissive air quality bum day. The air quality phone number is (530)251-4403. Air pollution control districts may fine those who burn on days determined to be "No burn days."

As always, anyone burning on property not under their legal authority must obtain permission from the property owner and present it upon request.

Forest Health and Fuel Reduction Work Underway Near Plumas Pines

The Forest Service and local contractors are hard at work keeping our surrounding forests safe!
Forest Health and Fuel Reduction Work Underway
The U.S. Forest Service and its partners have begun fuel reduction and pile burning operations in areas surrounding our District, including Johnsville, Plumas Pines, and Mohawk Valley.
  • Madora IRTC Project: Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) and Graeagle Timber are conducting an ~800-acre stewardship contract focused on reducing fuels adjacent to the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Operations will occur outside of the Limited Operating Period (mid-February through mid-September) until the contract’s current termination date of December 2026.

The ongoing logging operation in the Plumas Pines area typically begins around 5:00 a.m. and concludes between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. Crews expect to continue cutting for approximately 20 to 30 more days, progressing steadily from south to north through the project area.

  • Pile Burning: Firefighters from the Plumas National Forest plan to conduct pile burns near Johnsville and Plumas Pines as weather and safety conditions allow.

Burning operations are planned to begin Wednesday along Johnsville Road in Unit 27, with work moving into Unit 17 above the water tanks sometime next week. Burns will be conducted conservatively, producing minimal smoke; however, some smoke may drift into the community during early morning and late evening hours.

Please respect all contractors and fire personnel working in these areas. Never approach operating heavy equipment unless you have made direct eye contact with the operator—there are numerous blind spots and safety risks.

These projects are designed to improve forest health, enhance wildfire resilience, and protect nearby communities.

Just for fun, lets get to know
